Statistics humor is good humor.
Seeing that I have some sort of weird fetish about doing double blinded experiments, I did a test on 4 brands of orange juice from the store across the road.

At first I was planning to do this experiment like I usually do them, but during the start of testing something weird happened.
In the first test one of the juices got a score of 6 (1-10) but in the subsequent tests got 2.5 and 3. The reason for this is “The orange juice deviation”, a law of nature that states that “If you drink two different types of orange juice in a short time span, the second one will taste fucking weird”.
I tried rinsing with water between each test, but that did not help, so I had to do the testing another way to avoid interference between the different samples.
So to avoid the taste testing being influenced by the previous one, I drank 24 cups of orange juice over the course of 3 days with a minimum of 30 minute delay between tests. Thanks to my GF Stacy for helping with the blinding (she suspected it was all a ploy to make her get me juice).

So what’s the conclusion?
I’ve always been buying the Eldorado juice, however I clearly think Sunniva is the best (highest score in both tests). however the 1 Liter pack of Sunniva is almost twice the cost of the 2 Liter pack of First Price which is a very cheap brand. Despite that First Price did came in second and who doesn’t love a juice with a small standard deviation?

Today was the international 10:23 campaign. Thousands of people with a bias towards reality took huge overdoses of Homeopathic “Medicine”.
I took around 70 (3500% overdose) homeopathetic sleeping pills today, if I had taken real sleeping medicine I would probably be dead or dying about now.
Homeopathy of course is pure and utter bullshit, the 70 pills did not make me sleepy or affect me in any way, which is exactly what is expected for a “medicine” which has no active ingredients and consequently fail to show any effect besides placebo when scientifically tested.
Letting 60 pills melt under your tongue at once kinda sucks btw…

OM NOM NOM NOM!

I noticed this morning that my cereal box has the following claim on it:
“A study shows that 8 out of 10 who eats Kellogg’s All-Bran at least 3 times a week experience better digestion*”.
“*Source: Nordic study based on 643 respondents (who eats Kellogg’s All-Bran at least 3 times per week). The Nielsen Company 2007.”
This claim is reiterated on the Norwegian site, but the US site makes no such claims. (googling for “Kellogg’s health claims” might explain why).
Now, when making a health claim one would usually (unless you’re a homeopath, faith healer, acupuncturist, chiropractor, aura cleanser, can shoot rainbows out of your tummy, etc..) back up that claim with good scientific evidence, in other words you can show to a collection of scientifically valid experiments/studies.
This so called study as described above certainly raises a couple of red flags, and I suspect this “study” is of extremely poor quality, or maybe even be just a simple poll (not a scientific study at all).
Of course being a curious fella I sent the following mail to Kellogg’s:
Regarding the study being referred to on the All-Bran packaging and the website (http://www.allbran.no), carried out by The Nielsen company 2007.
- How may I obtain a copy of this study?
- How did the selection of participants for the study take place?
- What’s the distribution of participants between the different nordic countries, age composition and sex composition?
- What where the criteria for participant selection?
- Which questions where used, and how were the answers quantified?
- Of the 643 persons referred to in the study, how big a part of the total participants in the study do these represent?
- Is the data collected only based on self reporting of the daily intake of All-Bra, and the self reporting of the perceived increase in digestive function?
- Which methods were used to account for the placebo effect?
I’ll update this post when I get a reply

Here is the recipe for one of my favorite dinners:
Ingredients:
Instructions:
1. Put the frying pan on medium heat and thaw the sausages, when they are no longer frosen take them out of the pan and slice them up. Turn up the heat a bit and fry them until they are done. Then take them out of the pan.

2. Add some margarine to the pan, and fry the mushrooms until they are done, like the sausages take these out of the pan. Remember to season the mushrooms (pepper for example)

3. Slice up the Zucchini and the Red bell pepper and fry in the margarine left from the mushrooms

4. When the Zucchini and pepper is almost done, add the corn and seasoning of choice (I prefer celery salt and chilil mixes)

5. When the corn, zucchini and red bell pepper is done, add the sausages to warm them up

6. Lastly you add the mushrooms. Let it fry for a minute or two so that everything gets heated

Serve with pasta, rice or whatever you’d like. The result = nom nom

Goddammit, yesterday I was conned into buying a product called ‘Icy slush’ where you freeze 6 bags of cola flavored syrup and you’re supposed to get 6 portions of slush from said freezing.. BULLSHIT.
- The consistency is no where near “slush”, I might as well have frozen a regular freeze-it-yourself ice pop
- The cola flavor sucks, I’ve probably tasted around 7-8 different kinds of cola favored ice pop, and this is the only one I did not like.
- Not only does it taste like crap.. There is a weird kind of nauseating chemical (and not chemical in a good sense) aftertaste which made me sick after two spoonfuls.

The final part of the hot chocolate showdown, 4 new candidates:

Results (left to right)
Options Where the most expensive of the brands, and comes in a fancy container, the contents however is kind of a letdown, the chocolate taste was to dark and had a weird taste, just a few teaspoons where a bit nauseating.
Toro Rett i koppen (lett) Is not as good as the original version which was the best of the 7 brands. It has a after-taste which vaguely reminds of coffee (which I hate), but after a few sips the aftertaste is gone.
Eldorado Sjokodrikk is a low-priced brand, and tastes a bit watery with bland chocolate taste and an artificial sweetness.
Confecta is an extremely low calorie hot chocolate, and when I slurped some into my mouth I had the following sensation: “Oh my, I think I accidentally drank industrial waste, I better spit it out quickly, because whatever taste like this can’t be healthy”. It’s the worst hot chocolate, or hot beverage I’ve ever had. The taste is actually quite intriguing, it’s a bit like metal mixed with some kind of weird chemical / detergent / industrial raw material.

Today I tried out 3 kinds of hot chocolate mixes, and rated them on a scale from 1 to 6 where 6 being the best

All the drinks where made exactly after the instructions, and the results are (from left to right):
O’boy was very mild, and a bit sweet. It has a kind of milky taste to it
Regia Express kakao was good and a bit similar to Toro, but only received 4/6 because the chocolate taste was to dark and I personally don’t care for dark chocolate. It also felt a bit powdery
Toro Rett i koppen was the best so far with 5/6 points. The chocolate flavor was perfect and it was sweeter than the Regia brand.
