So, 3 episodes out what’s the initial impression?
Pretty much nothing.. Unlike SG-1 and Atlantis who started out with great episodes, the beginning of SG-U has been pretty slow and uninteresting.
Now I have no problems with shows starting off slow (TNG, DS9), but the biggest problem the series have is that there are no great characters, SG-1 and Atlantis had extremely lovable and funny characters. Universe have none.. I’ve also not seen any of the great Stargate humor..
I’m still going to watch the rest of the episodes, maybe it will get better. So far this show does not seem like Stargate at all

Well overall i have to say that i was really thrilled to see a new stargate show. it seemed to be a truly great and logical idea to switch to a spaceship-environment with a forced timeframe to explore different planets. this would enhance the possibillities even more.
well, as thrilled as i was when i was tuning in for the pilot…. so deeply disappointet i am after trying to FORCE me through all 5 episodes so far.
i am really sorry, i should represent the segment of people the show was initially aimed at. i loved BSG and i like dramatical character driven shows like ..let’s say, house and so on. But all these shows are pretty much unike in their feels. Including Stargate with all its Movies and tv shows until now.
I feel a bit embarrased that this is named stargate. and i think the producers and directors, which i..just for the record, really like (they are great guys!), should be embarrased too. because what they came up with, is not working as it should. actually it is a lot worse than that. it is setting fire in all the stargate communitys.. you can read it all over the internet. I estimate that at least 70% of regular stargate viewers wich liked any sg show before are really dissappointed with the overall style of this show.
It is wayyyyy too cheesy… too much lovestory (90210 in space.. literally!), absolutely unrealistic use of recources.. for e.g. the comunication through the ancient devices. They could just swap the stupid crowd with the best and brightest airforce can offer!! And its Over the top ridiculously dramatic. But what hurts most is that its plain boring over long distances. In the face of death, instead of pulling together and work the problems they fight against each other and they are banging each other. No body trusts the guy next to him. It is absolutely PAINFULL to watch most of the characters interact. It is so fucking embarrassing!
Damn it’s really a shame that they haven’t tried something more subtile before they pushed full throttle ahead for the “ReallityTV/MTVdatingshow/i sold my wife for a new flatscreen and married a whore”-audience

The only guy you can really enjoy is ELI. Colonel Young the doc and carlyls character, rush, they have great potential. Robert Carlyl is GREAT! I hope they try a 180 degree turn. and fast please. because if i have to watch ONE more single random lovescene with random guys and random blabla instead of problemsolving in a show called stargate.. then i’m afraid i have to puke in a envelope and send it to MGM. If they are not bankrupt by then which i would really appreciate by now…… cheers
Yeah, I’m also a HUGE fan of Battlestar Galactica, and if this was an attempt to copy it, it was a huge failure.. But I’ll keep watching it for now, to see where it goes.

I really wanted to like this show as well but after 8 dreadfull episodes I came up with 10 reasons Why Stargate universe sucks
SGU sucked so bad Gateworld is now screening critics and Syfy even turned off new account activation so I am now posting this all over the web.
1. Wrong name – should have called it “Lost Battlegate Atlantica’s Anatomy Voyager”.
2. Confusing – Scrambled the sequence with unnecessary flashbacks and cause confusion, this only works if there is a big mystery, not the 15 minutes tiny mystery in SGU (Trying to copy Lost)
3. Lacks originality – Tried too hard to please everyone and ended up being a pile of nothing. As if the writers are beginners writing their first show, copying a little bit from every popular shows out there and calls it a day.
4. Trying too hard – Unnecessary sex scene which had nothing to do with anything else and screams “me-too”, to think we’ll buy this crap just because you put it there is quiet insulting (Trying to copy Galatica)
5. Annoying – Way too much arguments, yes tension is needed between characters, but some idi0t decided it’d interesting for us to see people argue every step of the way (over common sense) from beginning to the end. Dude, just STFU and move on already.
6. Boring – Characters don’t stick, because they’re all average losers and a loud mouth, everyone hates loud mouths.
7. Shaky cameras – Dude, stay the **** still.
8. Careless – With plot holes the size of Texas.
9. Too greedy – Crossed the fine line between bravery and stupidity, introducing new stuff to reach wider audience is understandable, ditching everything that was good and piss off loyal fans to the brand itself is just plain stupid.
10. Bad acting – Soulless characters, cardboard acting, but what can you expect from a pilot with a lame script.
Obviously the guys running this project has the same mentality as the guys who renamed SciFi to Syfy (Syphilis) just to get paid.
Stargate UnYverse sucks.
If people want ice cream they get ice cream.
If people want steak they get steak.
Ice cream and steak don’t mix.

The cast is a complete step up from all other stargate series in terms of acting. You can’t blame “soulless” and “lame” characterisation on the actors – its the directors fault who wants the theme to be dark – but it has come out as bland.

I’m a huge SG fan. I own the box set, all the movies and all the atlantis stuff too. I watched the first 3 episodes of SGU and must conclude that it’s the worst sci-fi show ever made. .. why? Because it’s not sci-fi. It’s teen drama in space.
Excellent point on the misuse of resource .. those stones would certainly be better utilized by the best and brightest air force personel. The SG-1 I know would not have left the children to fend for themselves like this.
SGU is rubbish . Hopefully it’ll die a painful but quick death. I’m not downloading any more episodes.
Luckily the ship is so far away, that it doesn’t have an impact on any future SG series .. that is, unless SGU drag it on until EVERYBODY is sick of it.

SG-1 and SGA both had great characters and chemistry, they also avoided taking themselves to seriously and I think that was what made them truly great shows. SGU or Stargate Gilligans Island is way to serious and the premise is so lame, a galactic scavenger hunt? come on you can do better than that.
The SG franchise has a huge following but I fear this show is doomed, it has none of the charm of SG-1 and SGA, they could kill off any of these characters and I wouldn’t even care. Anybody remember Star Trek Enterprise??? It killed the Star Trek Franchise just like this show will kill the SG franchise.
P.S. I actually like Star Trek Enterprise which more than I can say for this show.
The 8th episode of SGU aired tonight. I watched it for 20 minutes then bailed out in disgust. I’m not sure if I’ll endure the remaining episodes.
The series lacks credible villains, a problem also faced by Star Trek :
- when Voyager ended, the Borg were defeated
- after Deep Space 9, the Dominion was history
- Enterprise ignored the existing timeline with the result that we know
- for the next Trek series, the producers could either locate the action in the 26th century or reinvent the wheel. They chose the most lucrative option, to the dismay of their loyal fans.
With the Stargate franchise, we have an identical situation :
- SG1 took care of the Goauld and the Ori, while the Asgard committed hara kiri on a planetary scale
- the Atlantis team got away from the Wraith and the Replicators through stupid device plots.
Once a hero has vanquished all foes, what else remains for them to do ? Either they retire to their village or they go on a pilgrimage. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper chose the latter.
Here’s the most perplexing part : for 12 years, we witness the triumph of the Stargate characters over divine powers (Ori), demons (Goauld, Wraith) and machines (Replicators). They inherited the Asgard knowledge. In essence, they became gods. Yet, in the third installment of the franchise (Universe), these Olympians are at the mercy of a decaying ship. It decides where they to go, when there’s a blackout, where the crew can found water, etc.
Wright and Cooper are cornered. Their only way out is soap opera. That’s why SGU is a mix between “Lost in space” and “Gossip Girl”.
My sole consolation is that in Canada, Space airs reruns of SG-1 and Atlantis on a daily basis. How the mighty have fallen…
That is no excuse. Any half-awake, half-creative writers can deal with that problem, and the SG crew are far, far above HALF-quality. Or were.
wow.. i loved sg1 and atlantis… and i really tried to give universe a shot.. just watched the 9th episode and said fuck it… its the worst one so far!! like previously stated in the above comments, the concept of universe is kind of cool, but could still use a few tweaks.. maybe a quicker pace, and my god!!! GET RID OF HALF THE DRAMA AND REPLACE IT WITH THE (ALSO PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED) PROBLEM SOLVING AND STARGATE HUMOR!!

The shows tries a bit to be like Battlestar Galactica, but BSG was 20 times better, at least it was sci-fi with lots of INTERESTING human relationships and characters.. Not this underwritten teen drama crap in Universe.

I just wanted to add, that in a previous post, I admited to downloading the first three SGU episodes. I also explained that we (wife and I) own the SG1 box set, the movies, and Atlantis. We got rid of our cable tv because, well , there are too many commercial breaks and since we started exclusively watching box sets (Firefly, B5, Andromeda … etc), we can’t stand commercials.
… so now we download episodes, and if we like what we see, THEN we purchase it. Andromeda is a perfect example of a show we where worried about, and turned out to be top-notch sci-fi worth purchasing.
SGU isn’t worth the bandwidth I used to download the first 4 episodes. (Yeah we went and tried the fourth episode to see if it got better … BLECK!!!)

Agree, I got all my favorites on DVD/BD (star trek, stargate, fireflly, b5, seinfeld, curb, eureka, buffy, angel, arrested development, Soon BSG, etc..) because they are worth the money and the people who made the shows deserve to be paid for it.
The way it looks now, there is NO way a SGU dvd box will ever stand next to my SG1/Atlantis boxes. I haven’t checked out Andromeda yet, it’s on my todo list along with Quantum Leap and Farscape

This show has gone DOWNHILL. Long time viewer and owner of all SG-1 series and SG Atlantis series. What are you guys doing? I have seen increase in sex and homosexualism in this show. There is NO need for this in this show. No longer support or purchase anymore DVD’s of this show. NO LONGER a VIEWER of SGU. Removed it from my TIVO.
the increase in sex and drama is lame and not what I suspect most of the loyal Stargate fans signed up for when starting to watch the new show.

Once this simple fact is understood, we can move on to exactly why SGU simply fails on all counts.
SGU sucks as a drama because of 1 simple reason – The writers lack the skills to make viewers care about the characters.
I thought Defying Gravity was bad until I watched SGU. That’s when I realized while I found DG piss boring, atleast I cared about some of the characters in DG.
The writers of SGU sucks and they know it, the signs are everywhere, they are so inscure about their lame space drama writing skills, they have to invent this “jump the shark/nuke the fridge” stone device that allow them to go back to the only thing they know how to write – Earth love/hate relationships.
They are also so insecure about it that they had to hijjack the SG brand, because deep inside they know they lack the quality to make a good drama series that can stand on its own.
I am done with SGU, hopefully someone who understands SciFi will come up with a proper alternative soon.

Well episode 8 (“Time”) was not all that bad actually, nothing really fresh and original, but a pretty standard sci-fi story, and it was by far the best of the episodes so far.. This game me a brief glimmer of hope that ended as soon as I saw episode 9.. I’m just about to see episode 10.. so wish me luck

Nuke SGU – it cannot be saved. I’ve seen a couple series start poorly, then become good, but SGU is soooo terrible and soooo far gone, any attempt to save it will cause more harm that good. Nuke it. Kill it. End the series the way it should be ended… have these low-life moron slimeball characters take stupid, banal actions that get them ALL killed. Let them vaporize themselves in some gigantic catastrophe that leaves zero-room-for-doubt — end of story and good riddens.
Yesterday I watched the first and second Episode of SGU and I thought “WHAT THE **** IS THAT??”.
I am SciFi-Fan especially SG1. I watched every Episode and loved it. I want to see a team that goes on missions as a team and behaves like a team…..
DO: discover new technologies; face new enemies; act like a team; be interesting for the viewer; be objective and open-minded
DON’T: threaten each other in almost every scene; behave like chickens in an old disaster movie; behave that emotional (girls normally won’t look SGU anyway); pay this cheap, bad actors.

There is so much wrong with the characters. think about it.. everybody on the ship must be either an SG military personnel (highly trained to handle unpredictable alien situations) or highly talented engineer/scientist and since they were looking for an ancient built location, these eggheads must be well versed in Ancient language/tech (post Atlantis). In SG1 itself they show SG teams have people well versed in Ancient. Even Eli, a civilian who merely played a game knows something about the ancient language. the only civilans in the expedition are the senator’s daughter and the IOA rep. Rest are capable resources and yet the show intro says these are the wrong people at the wrong place… how exactly are they wrong people??? Its not like you picked them up from a city bus.
That’s funny. I was just thinking of why Stargate sucks… and what I came up with was the fact that the characters are simply boring. There are always conspiracies and everyone just acts tough. I know that in their situation its hard to add humor but shows like Lost definitely have the same circumstances but the characters are amazing compared to SG-U. Everything on this show is expected… there are no surprises and that Colonel character simply sucks. This show can be frustrating… they need to step out of their stupid studio once in a while and go to different planets and have more adventure. If the whole season is on the damn ship then its pointless
What the hell happened? The stargate franchise used to be awesome, and now IT SUCKS!! The show is too much like Battlestar Gallactica and ,hate me if you want, I did not like that show. Drama is great and all, but you need to throw in some humor. Show’s that are all dark and bleak are not entertaining. I hope this show gets canceled soon.
I usually keep to myself, more so when it is a forum of hate and discontent, but Battlestar Gallactica to me always seemed overly melodramatic with someone always bleeding, crying, having sex or getting drunk which is probably why the camera man could never hold the camara still. Universe is more of the same and since episode 2 I have treated the same. Turn it off and move on.

I think I quite like SGU.
It is of course deliberately a huge pile of crap. And it hits it target audience perfectly and i’m sure it will gain more momentum and a large fanbase 2-3 seasons in. I think there’s a lot of money to be made already after a few seasons.
From a producers standpoint i would applaud the decisions they made. As a fan of the SG franchise (and good sci-fi in general) I wish them eternal damnation.
Once O’Neil left, the soul of the show disappeared. SG1 was a great show. had great chemistry, great story lines – it had everything! I was never a fan of Atlantis, but it was interesting at times. But this SGU really is crap-gate. It disses the Stargate name – which was a show that really blew my mind at one time. Booooooo to SGU!
I REALLY like the idea of this show, combining lost and grey’s anatomy and stargate.. but it hasnt worked out well. It’s the writers/directors/producers trying to do something completely out of their realm. They are sci fi artists by nature – theyve been making sci fi for 20 years! they could never pull off a drama, not in a million years. They need to pull in a writer/director who actually writes dramas (and is good at them!).

I have tried and tried to like SGU but just cannot manage it. Its like being dragged along on with the wife on a shopping trip, boring as hell and pointless. I dont care if the next episodes are going to be better, im just totally fed up with SGU now and am not going to waste any more time trying to watch it. I will just start at SG1 episode 1 and work my way through them again, much more interesting even after all these years.

The characters give full control over to the invaders because the ship is malfunctioning. Obvuisly now they have control so what do you think they’ll do?
Everything goes as planned but The Leader of the alliance gets shot and the generals friend gets shot too. Everything went out of place.
There for a new leader took the alliances place and said “Im ending this”
Gets all the main characters in one room and ready to shoot. (End of episode)
