Operation silent computer

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

Everything comes at a price. For example, my new computer though being able to run Crysis pretty smooth, sounds like a small hovercraft. And as requested by Stacy I decided to move the computer out into the hallway.

Step 1: Drill a large hole in the wall between the living room and the hallway, the hole is up under the roof, next to the projector screen
Hole in wall

Step 2: Order one 10 meter long DVI cable, 2 PS2 cables, 3x audio cables and wait around 2 weeks :(

Step 3: Extend the hole to so that the DVI connector fits trough it :)

Step 4: Put a junction box over the hole and run all the cables trough it
Cables trough the wall

Step 5: Put the PC in the hallway on top of your weapon safe and connect all the cables, then close up the junction boxes

Step 6: Enjoy your very tidy desk (that shuttle computer on my desk is my trusty server hosting aakretech.org, etc..)

The result is really amazing, and the living room is much more quiet and pleasant. And when I walk into the hallway and is hit by that monstrous sound I find it hard to believe I could sit 50 cm from it for hours on end :)

Crysis scare!

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I got my new computer set up now, with two XFX 8800GTS in SLI, and imagine my horror when Crysis refused to install:

Error 1335. The cabinet file ‘Object~1.cab’ required for
this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This
could indicate a network error, an error reading from
the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package

I tried installing it 3 times and then I gave up, asuming the DVD was damaged. I played Call of Duty 4 for a few hours (pretty neat campaign so far).
Then I tried googleling the error message and found out I’m not the only one who had this problem.

I tried the simplest of the solution first (disabling my AVG antivirus software) and hey presto, Crysis installed without problems :)

New Computer

Friday, November 9th, 2007

I used my shiny new credit card to order myself a brand new computer today :) Just ordered the computer, will keep my old screen/keyboard mouse.

Specs:

  • Cooler Master Centurion 534 tower
  • Corsair Powersupply 620W
  • Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHz CPU
  • Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2GB RAM
  • Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB hard drive
  • 2x XFX GeForce 8800GTS 500M 320MB graphics card
  • And a new DVD Burner + a fancy mousepad

Now I can look forward to playing games such as:

  • Crysis
  • Farcry 2
  • Silent Hunter 4 (this was so choppy on my current computer that I could not play it)
  • NeverWinter Nights 2 (my computer had a really hard time running it, choppy even at low graphics)
  • Call of Duty 4
  • BioShock (maybe, don’t think it’s my cup of tea, at least I should play the demo)
  • Half Life 2 (never really got to try this game)
  • Oblivion (have not completed it yet :( and there is also the expansion)
  • Age of Conan (Just going to try it a little, can probably quit any time I want)
  • Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway
  • Fallout 3
  • GTA 4
  • Postal 3
  • Startrek Online
  • Anything else that pops up :)

Damn flixter

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

I was having fun on Facebook with the Flixter Never ending movie quiz, trying to get into the top 100 list, and of course I did not want to sit there and actually answer those lame questions all day, so I got the internal frame flixter uses for the quiz and made a macro to guess the questions repetadly (only had a 20% chance of guessing right) but when guessing very fast for 16 hour shifts (while I slept and was at work) it adds up.

flixter score

Only rank 999, however Flixter made a damn update a few days ago that limits the number of questions you can answer each day (or some unknown time period) :(

Flixter No more questions

So there goes my dream of excelling at the never ending movie quiz down the drain (of course I could do the quiz without cheating, but I can think of about 1000 better ways to spend my time).. Also I noted some of the questions had really weird distribution in their answers

weird flixter score

That only adds up to around 11% answers, and I saw this on many questions, including some that where so easy ANYONE would have known the answer, weird..

Anyway.. Flixter ruined everything! :D

A handy little tool

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Ever wanted to sort a textfile or block of text alphabetically based on lines? I wanted to, and could not find any simple tool to do this online, so I wrote this little program that can sort text and has a few other features as well.

Time for some royal battlegrounds pwning…

Summer time

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

It’s officially summer. Me, Stacy and two friends went ocean kayaking today, just for an hour or so by the docks. And it was pretty nifty, I might join the kayak club to get free access to a ocean kayak, but the security course I have to take first probably wont be held again until Autumn :(

In other news:

  • Hopefully Nemi will be getting a new friend in 44 days (+ 6-8 weeks).
  • I started to play WOW again (lvl62 priest FTW)
  • I’ve not eaten any meat for 5 months
  • I got a new sweeet monitor (Syncmaster 22″ widescreen)
  • I won 2 out of 4 dungeons & dragons miniatures games in one sitting (new record :) )
  • I watched all of Stargate (just waiting for season 4 of atlantis to start now)
  • Almost done watching Battlestar Galactica Season 3 (Damn the end of season 2 and start of season 3 was totally insane)
  • I started watching Dexter, which is pretty good so far

Facebook got me!

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I gave up, and finally got a facebook account.. yaaay..

I also took a neat test that indicates I should become a programmer, well at least I can go home tonight without any regret on giving up on my singing career.

INTJ – “Mastermind”. Introverted intellectual with a preference for finding certainty. A builder of systems and the applier of theoretical models. 2.1% of total population.

Free Jung Personality Test (similar to Myers-Briggs/MBTI)

HAHAHA=) the test also discourages me to work with Childcare or wedding planning :D

Rabbits like to move!

Saturday, April 7th, 2007

Finally done moving.. used most of the easter to move the 10 km from Steinan to Tiller (Both in Trondheim). Still haven’t got everything unpacked and in place but the essentials are up and running (refrigerator, couch, tv and computer) :)

rayman rabbit
I’m closing up on 75% completion on the story mode of Rayman Raving Rabids, our only Wii game at the moment. And let me tell you, the game is GREAT. Lots of fun mini games, cute rabid bunnies and the best sounds in a video game ever. After I’m done with story mode I’m going to get ALL the bonus material, even if it kills me, I’ve come across a few bugs, but most are easily fixed (like some mini games where not possible to do unless the system was running in 60 hz video).
Rating: 9.5 / 10

Oh, seeing that we don’t have much Stargate Left (halfway trough season 10 and season 3 on SG-1/Atlantis) I decided to try and watch Farscape in sequence :)

Current events

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Haven’t posted much lately.. Things have been pretty busy with work and the moving (only 6 days left, yaaaaay!), I’ve had almost no time for UFO Afterlight or Silent Hunter 4 the last 2 weeks, and I don’t expect I will have much time for C&C 3 when it is released next week.

I took out my scooter today, drove around a bit.. took like half an hour to start the bastard after it being in storage for 5 months this winter. I’m looking forward to not taking the bus to work tomorrow :)

The other thing that has kept me busy lately is that I have been making a new webpage (that combines aakretech.no, .com, .net and .org into a single page). Not quite done yet but most of the pages are in place. Removing the cocoon webapp for aakretech.org from my Tomcat server reduced the server’s startup time from 15 seconds to 0.7 seconds.

Not much more to say really.. Nemi got her new cage, but we wont get it for her until we move next Sunday/Monday

Farewell cruel world!

This post contains descriptions of my terrible plight, it is not recommended reading for the very young or those of you with a heart condition. It contains extensive whining.
