Big FPS shoot-out

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Some while ago I got my new computer, and I bought some FPS (First Person Shooter) games, and now I’ve finally played enough to make up an opinion about them:

Crysis
Well, first of all I had very high expectations to this game, as Far Cry was my favorite FPS game ever, and all the graphics hype also rose the expectations. I bought this game together with COD4 and HL2, and played it first right up until you go from fighting Koreans to aliens. Then I tried out some HL2, and then I forgot all about Crysis.

I still have not completed the game, as I kind of lost interest after getting to the part with the aliens. The graphics is superb, and the first part when you are on the Island fighting Koreans is great (basically just Far Cry with a fancy suit on), but after this the levels get boring. Will probably play the first part again, while I wait for Far Cry 2 :)

Call of duty 4
I played this for a night when I thought there was something wrong with my Crysis disc (but it installed fine with antivirus disabled). However HL2 completely dominated my game time pretty long, then I got back to this game.. It is by far the most enjoyable Call of Duty game so far even tough it does not let you attack Normandy :( The game is very short, but has several enjoying missions like shooting at people miles away from the gunship only Thermal video, the sniper mission, shooting at people from a moving car, etc.. The graphics and sound is great and the missions are fun, but the game is to short :|

I don’t care much for the endless waves of enemies popping up, forcing you to constantly push forward, but it actually worked pretty well in this game.

The orange box

  • Half-Life 2
I played trough this game in 17 hours, and was not even tempted to start up crysis once ;) The story is very good and the game is way better than the original Half-Life ever was. It might have been a bit short, but defiantly one of the best FPS games I’ve ever played, up there with Far Cry.
  • Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast
Well, this was 20 minutes of moderate fun, nothing special, but it was “free” so I cant really complain. Not worth playing
  • Half-Life 2: Episode one
This starts up right after Half-Life 2 end. I’m really glad there is a episode 1 and 2, as both the original Half-Life 2 and episode 1 ends rather abruptly. The episode was a bit short, and only lasted around 5 hours.
  • Half-Life 2: Episode two
Again, this picks up where Episode one left off, But I think the maps of episode2 are better, and the story is great.. It does not end as suddenly as episode 1 or HL2, but I will be buying episode 3 as soon as it is available on steam or in the store. This episode took 6 and a half hour to play trough.
  • Portal
This was the first game from the Orange box that I tried, and the gameplay is pure genius, I’ve already written a whole post dedicated to portal, but to sum it up: Extremely fun, really refreshing and cool gameplay, funny humor, but much to short :(
  • Team Fortress 2
Pure multiplayer, but pretty fun.. Very cartoony and a bit silly.. I think the playable classes are very well balanced and fun to play, the maps and game modes are also very entertaining.

Conclusions
Now the original Far Cry is the second best FPS game I’ve ever played :|

Half Life 2 completely blows Crysis out of the water, sure Crysis looks fantastic, but when it comes to the story Crysis basically has “special ops kill Koreans, stop aliens” while the Half Life universe has a brilliant story and lovable characters. I am really looking forward to Episode 3 which is said to end the HL2 story arc. Also Since a cargo/research ship owned by Aperture Science will be the main focus, one can only hope for a Portal gun :D

Wii!

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

I picked up a Wii last night, with Wii-sports and Rayman Raving Rabbids. Just played it for like 20 minutes, but so far it seems pretty cool :)

I’ve found a few interesting games, and I might pick up some of them:

Not really that many Wii games that I currently NEED to have, I got both UFO Afterlight, Silent Hunter 4, and soon C&C 3 for the PC, so shooting rabid rabbits with plungers should do just fine this easter

goddammit, I managed to catch a cold.

Not that having a cold is THAT bad, I just get pretty hazy and dizzy which mean I’m not going to do much good as a programmer.

Also being home from work is not so fun as it might sound.. Just finished Far Cry and have no games to play (why couldn’t I get sick AFTER Silent hunter 4 or C&C 3?).

Me and Stacy also watch practically every tv-series worth watching together.. which means I don’t have much to choose from when doing solo-watching. Only things I can watch without watching something I’ve seen 3-8 times before is either the A-team or ‘Allo ‘Allo!, and honestly none of these tempts me at the moment :(

Halo..

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Being done with Far Cry I thought I might try out another FPS, and I found Halo for PC, and figured I might give it a go just to see what all the fuzz is about.

I only played the game for 3 hours or so, and I must say I’m pretty disappointed.

  • Can only carry 2 weapons at a time.
  • The main weapon is (even at close range) extremely imprecise
  • The enemies are totally ridiculous
  • The AI sucks
  • The levels sucks (well, the fact that it takes place on a Ring World is pretty cool), but the levels are very fixed.
  • And the worst problem (which is probably enhanced by the fact I’ve been playing a lot of Far Cry lately), the game itself is very Arcade-FPS, and I HATE that..

FPS should be like Far Cry or Operation Flashpoint.. not running around in a game made by the level designers of Pac-Man, firing the worlds most imprecise weapon at enemies that seems like they come from a low quality cartoon for 8-year olds..

Far Cry

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Just completed the last level (Volcano) of Far cry. Taking down Krieger was pretty hard, and took like 20 tries.

After that, I got to the center of the volcano (Big open space with double doors and 4-5 of those big nasty Trigens with rocket launchers.

After trying to do this part for like 30 times, I kinda cheated (that is I found a little tip), where you push a chair under a big door to prevent it from closing.. I could then kill the Trigens that came waiting outside the door, and still had access to a fully stocked armory :)

Getting past the 6 guards with grenade launchers was pretty easy using a few grenades, and then.. Cutscene and relax =)

I only played the game on Normal and had no problems until the end.. Damn the last level of the game is hard.. I don’t believe for a second it is possible to do the last level on the hardest difficulty and not using the “char trick”.

The game itself is without a doubt the best FPS I’ve ever played, great story, great sound/music, and the graphics is legendary. The actual shooting part, weapons, AI, physics, are all GREAT.

Gamespot rated this game with only 9.2, but I’m going to be generous and give it a

farcry.jpg
Finally got past the Save Valerie bug in Farcry, so played 3 more levels today.. Nothing like running around on a sinking freighter shooting at a helicopter with a rocket launcher..

I came over a web comic I haven’t seen before today.. it has it all, Jack Thompson bashing, MS/Vista bashing and World of Warcraft references :)

Sledging was canceled.. it’s hard to motivate yourself to go outside when there is -12 c outside :(

Farcry
Goddammit, I spent an hour trying to do the final part of the “Control” mission of Far Cry, each time I would dive trough the tunnel, and come up and be surrounded by lots and lots of those zombie-mutant-things..

Then this morning I accidentally took a glimpse upwards and found another way into the room, a way that parked me right above the bastards, allowing me to take them all out in a single try.

A word of advice, learned the hard way…

If you get drunk, and play Far Cry until 4 am, your dreams are going to be soooo fucked up!

Jello shots, sledging and evil mosters with bazooka arms

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

After some Jello shots we went outdoors (yes, that creepy IRL place), and we actually had a hell of a time sledging down a very steep hill in garbage bags (not used ones, I might add), following the high speeds and some good old “pants and face full of snow” we went back inside for some more jelly.
The rest of the people left me here without adult supervision and went to into town.. apparently this is where people go after they have consumed a given amount of alcohol.

Me however remained faithful at my post, playing Far Cry with a slightly impaired aim.

I’m however stuck at level 10 with a crazy bastard with rocket launcher arms and like 8 of those smaller monkey-zombie-mutant-bastards.. so.. I think I might watch some curb and finish of the Jello shots :)

Any misspellings above are dedicated to Stolichnaya, the best vodka ever.
