Fedcon 2011 – Day 4

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Sunday 01.05.2011

Last day of a convention is always a little bit sad, and there is also not that much happening. I didn’t even arrive at the Convention hotel until around 13:00.

I watched the panel with Garret Wang and Robert Duncan Donuts McNeil, it was fun but it seemed they had much more fun the day before. Afterwards I was going to get a picture taken with them, but Fedcon had rescheduled it to earlier that day, so I missed it >:(

I met up with Zach and DJ Bear from Trekradio.com, he was also the victim of Fedcons rescheduling, and they had moved all of his interviews with the actors without telling him even though he confirmed the time 2-3 hours before the interviews.

I watched the panel with Wil Wheaton and Marina Sirtis which was fun, but a little bit less energetic than the previous panels they were in. Also the questions for them and for Garret/Robert were also not as good/fun as earlier in the convention.

Random picture of hot girl in silk specter costume!:

I went by the infinite space booth, and actually got to try the PVP part of the game (1vs1). It was fun, but it’s really hard to review a game that is not even in alpha yet. All in all I think Infinite space should be fun and has lots of potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing it in alpha/beta later this year.

The closing ceremony was a little bit disappointing and went on at least 30 minutes to long, but afterwards I went with DJ Bear, Zach and two very nice Swiss people out for dinner (A pizza with 4 cheeses and pineapple), the only hot meal I had during my entire stay in Germany.

Then we went back to the hotel and had drinks and ice cream. I returned to my hotel around midnight.

The Infrared Thermometer

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I just got this neat gadget from ebay:

It can measure almost anything from -32 to 350c at a distance using a infrared sensor.

So far I’ve made some amazing scientific discoveries for mankind:

  • The surface temperature of hands and arms varies between 33-36 c
  • The perfect frying pan temperature for making veggie burgers is 220 c
  • 65-70c is the optimal temperature a slice of pizza
  • A sleeping ferret only has a temperature of 28c, thanks to good insulating fur
  • The thermometer can be used to detect sleeping ferrets (there are lots of blankets in the living room)
  • The mean temperature difference between the floor and ceiling in my apartment is 2.2c
  • Driving at 80 km/h on a motorcycle a cold spring night gives your legs a surface temperature of 16 c (full riding gear).
  • The paint from a can of spray paint (the kind used for cars/motorcycles) is quite cold: 0-1 c
  • When using quick epoxy, the chemical reaction from mixing the base and primer makes the epoxy 35 c (in a 14 c ambient temperature).

The tapwater temperature

In an effort to prevent Stacy from using to hot water while making lemonade, I measured the temperature in 100 ml increments, showing that the water will at first have the room temperature of the kitchen, followed by the room temperature of the basement before reaching the optimal 4-5 c temperature. This took around 8 liters (or 15 seconds), but will of course vary from building to building.

Sailing in bergen

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

I was in bergen two weeks ago, doing part 1 of getting my sailing certificate.

Friday 06:00
For a man who woke up at 04:15, I feel remarkably… like myself :)
The buss from the city to the airport took around an hour, I’m now at gate 41, and got like 10-20 minutes
before boarding starts.
bah time for boarding.. I barely had time to start up eclipse…

Friday 09:00
The flight only took an hour, and the buss in to the city took 30 minutes.. then 15 minutes to find the hotel.
Would only have been 4 minutes If I had brought a compass :)

Friday 13:00
The hotel is pretty nice (P-hotels.no), and I just slept for a couple of hours (which I sorely needed), and woke up
at 12:00 by the pizza being delivered to my room.
The sailing doesn’t start until 17:30, the only thing I have to do by then is to buy some shoes I can sail in
I only brought my flipflops, and thankfully the weather report seems to be accurate, and the whole weekend
should have sunny weather.
The hotel only has unsecured wireless network, so I’m currently ssh’ing to my server and using bitlbee + irssi
to be on msn. Thank thor gmail is availible trough https :)

Friday 22:00
Just got back from the sailing, it was just a quick run outside bergen where we got to know the boat and
did some basic stuff like setting sail, and such..

Sailboat 2

Now I can stay in bed and watch an episode of Six feet under at the same time as stacy watches the same episode
back home :)

Saturday 20:00
I got to the sailing at 10:00, and we practiced parking the boat by the dock a few times, then we
headed out and did some sailing outside Bergen..

Sailboat

Sunday

Today we got some wind and where probably sailing at around 5-6 knots at the top.

When I got back to the hotel I had some pizza for dinner, I bought it from an Italian place just next to the
hotel, and it was 10 times better than the pizza I had last night (and 1/4 of the price). Dolly dimples sucks
like a neutron star.

Pizza

I hit the sack pretty early, as again I had to be up at around 05:00 for the flight back to Trondheim.
