I recently bought a cheap drawing tablet, the Bamboo one from Wacom. So far I’m pretty pleased with the tablet and the software that came with it.
Here are some crappy images I made with the pencil and paintbrush tool:

I recently had a good idea for my Star Trek game, this would also solve the problem with some factions having very few ships designs, and might even allow me to add more factions (Ferengi, Dominion, Kazon, borg?), seeing that finding and balancing enough ship classes for each faction was the biggest problem with adding more factions.
It might even make it possible to add some more exotic factions (Xindi, Gorn, Breen, Son’a, Tholian, Vidiian, Hirogen, Tzenkethi or maybe even the Terran Empire
Instead of just having 4-5 static ship classes where all ships made of this class are identical, one could have a little star ship designer where you fit a hull with the components you want (warp drive, impulse drive, phasers, torpedo launchers, sensors, fusion reactors, shield emitters, armor, cloaking devices, troop transports, colonization and terraforming tools).
This means I will have to do some re-designing the next time I have time to work on the game (wont be that much, only implemented 2 ship classes so far)
According to my superior mspaint skills, the interface will look like this:
It’s that time of year again when I really want to get a boat, I’ve pretty much decided that I want the Bavaria 31 Cruiser
It’s a bit expensive (almost 600’000 kr or~110’000$), so I have to take up a loan in order to get it, if I take up a loan for 500’000 over the next 15 years, that should be around 5000 kr each month.. I’m expecting a raise this christmas, so that should provide 2500-3000 kr each additional month. Maybe if I’m lucky I will get some cash from the company options contract , but I consider the whole thing a bit iffy.. The bottom line is that nothing (except death or severe disabling injury) can keep me from getting a sailboat
I’m getting my VHF Short Range Certificate next month, I guess it’s a start
Also need to find a harbor spot which is kinda hard to get in Trondheim, as there are more people/boats than there are vacancies.
OMG, I didn’t even know it was in the making, and here I browse by ubisoft.com just now and see the game will be released in march..
Needless to say I’m a huge fan of the Silent Hunter series.. I’m a bit disappointed that the game has been moved to the pacific, and not the “standard” WW2 Germany setting. Still the graphics more than make up for it
Maybe it’s time to upgrade the computer.. graphics looks to nice to run smoothly on this old heap of junk (hee hee.. I said heap).
So, tempted by a banner over at CAD, I downloaded the free online game “Voyage Century Online“, a game where you play a pirate on land and water (with your own ship). The graphics was ok, but after playing around with the game for a couple of hours I deleted it.
The quest text where severely lacking, skill system seems kind of boring, and the actual ship to ship battle system is terrible (auto-aim and very boring battles, even Monkey Island 3 has a better ship vs. ship minigame), moving the character on land was not much better; (left-click to walk) which sometimes did not respond properly.
The whole thing ended in me being sunk while running into someone who where fighting pirates (actually collided with his boat). Chat text is on the left of the screenshot

For some reason I have been trying out a game called Ship Simulator 2006, the game involves steering different ships around (racing boats, tugboats, cargo ships, cruise ships, etc..).
The concept is pretty good, and driving a huge cargoship around the port can be pretty funny, at least for a while.. The game fail to have any real missions, every mission consists of: Start at point X, drive close to points A, B, C and Return to point Y. And that gets really boring after a while.
The graphics is so-so, water has nice texture and reflection but is completely flat/2D. The landscapes around are not really that good. The AI of the other ships on the ocean are really horrible (they only seem to follow simple waypoints), and the game is missing radar, decent GPS, sonar/depth display.
Overall the game has about 2-4 hours of fun in it (at least if you like ships), but if you really want the taste of salt in your mouth then you better fire up Silent Hunter 3, turn up the volume and set the weather conditions to the worst possible.
