New job + curse of the fourth floor

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

September 1. I started working at Bibsys, which is a company that develops library systems.
Teknobyen

This means I can no longer spend the days in my underwear, watching Macgyver dvd’s and playing Neverwinter Nights (I have somehow managed to loose my save games, so my once proud half-orc barbarian is no longer… but there is a seriously overpowered lvl 8 wizard that has taken his place).

I’m also happy to say that “everything” at Bibsys is Java, so my chances of being haunted by php are virtually gone :)

The curse of the fourth floor
the First time I whored my programming services out for money
was over at Uninet, I was working on the 4th floor.
My first full time job was over at Intrapoint, where I worked on the 4th floor.
The job after Intrapoint was over at Market Monitor / Betradar, also here I stayed on the 4th floor.. then I was moved to another office which was ALSO on the 4th floor.

Now I’m working at Bibsys, at the 4th floor.. spooky :o

Bye bye Betradar

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Last Friday was my last day of work at my previous employer Betradar, I only worked there for 5 months, but there was to much php, and I’m not a big fan of sports either.

I was a bit sad to leave, as the people there are really nice, and the place is a great place to work. Unfortunately when you’re a Java zealot, working with php all day makes you rather unhappy :|

Either way, I’ve applied for a couple of jobs and should her back from them this week. I’m also keeping an eye open for anything interesting that might show up.

This however gives me much more time to work on my Star Trek game, so hopefully I’ll manage to dodge real work for some weeks or a month :)

Back from sweden

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I was in Åre Sweden this weekend, on a company excursion by Betradar (where I’m starting work Friday).
Cabin, Sweden

They had rented a large cabin (250 m2), and around 20′ish employees hang out there from Friday to Sunday. I got to meet some of my soon to be coworkers, and I made some progress on my Star Trek Game (Which has kinda been stuck in development hell for the last two years).

Unlike some of my previous code that I have written, coming back to Trekwars (second rewrite I might add) was very pleasant, good planning and Object Oriented Design seems to have paid off :)

I was able to implement the tick/turn system, and did some GUI work on the galaxy view, and halfway implemented the system view and research view. I also worked a bit on the order system, so given a few more hours of development I think I could actually move fleets of ships around :D

Still much work to be done until the game is anywhere near playable

  • Starship pathing algorithm and order system
  • Server data limiting (The client receives a big map ‘the galaxy’ from the server, currently it sends EVERYTHING, but this will have to be changed so that users cant cheat by reading “secret” data. Also by making a custom user copy the server will enable fog of war, and “distort” information in far away areas where sensor strength/resolution is low)
  • Sensor coverage algorithm (got it worked out on paper somewhere)
  • Planet Build systems (halfway done)
  • Combat resolution (ship to ship + ground combat)
  • Colonization and Starbases + Listening posts construction
  • Social tools (ingame mail + chat)
  • Natural phenomena (black holes, neutron stars, nebula, wormholes, etc..)

It was really fun working on the game again, and hopefully I wont shelve it for so long again. Here are some screenshots showing the GUI stuff done this weekend.

Galaxy view – shows the map with systems and starships

Star system map – Shows details about a star system, panel to build new structures/ships is not implemented yet. BTW those are temporary planet pictures that I drew in ms paint with my laptop touchpad this weekend, I actually think they are kind of cute :)

Research View – Only just started this, so it just show your current research tree err.. stack :)

I quit!

Friday, December 21st, 2007

I quit my job at Intrapoint yesterday.

The reason being that I got a much better offer from another company here in Trondheim named Betradar. The job pays better, and have more Java which I find much more interesting, and I’ll be starting February 1st.

A funny side note:)
A friend told me that some people where I currently work got offended by the Christmas greeting I sent out, which included a link to the song: So long and thanks for all the fish. I’m not sure if this guy is pulling my leg or not, but allegedly some people at work interpreted the lyrics rather verbatim and seem to be under the impression of the following:

  • I have tried to warn them of impending doom
  • I am intellectually superior (well, many of them were PHP “programmers”…) :D
  • The world or the company is about to be destroyed (Damn Vogons and their galactic bypasses)
  • Despite tuna nets I liked most of them, especially the toddlers
  • If I could have a single wish, I would have a tasty fish (common vegetarian craving)
  • My biggest regret is not learning how to sing

I guess that’s what you get for sending out a goodbye / merry Christmas message as a Douglas Adams reference. Actually I’m pretty sure the guy was just trying to play a trick on me (which I kinda fell for, I must admit), as I find it hard to believe that my current co-workers are so extremely imaginative / paranoid :)

7 Days of hell

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Damn, this has been an exhausting week.. It all started at work last Friday when we got a list of lots of crappy functionality we had to implement in the game by Monday. So my weekend was pretty much spent on adding products and setting up tenders in PRIME:

Tuesday evening was lost while taking the final part of the boating course.

Wednesday I had to walk over an hour outside in the pouring rain, and take the VHF/SRC exam.

Thursday I had to walk  an hour outside in much worse weather, and take the boatman’s exam.

Now it’s Friday and I’m taking the day off to recover.

At least both exams went great and I should get my VHF Short Range Certificate, and my certificate of boatmanship in a couple of weeks.

My day at work

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Today I finished up the project from yesterday (A applet for testing the bandwidth to our server).
I spent most of yesterday trying to figure out why the upload speed always where 20 times higher than the download speed, I tought it was a bug but now I’m convinced it’s some evil setup in the firewall that throttles the speed like this.

Here is the result
jacosca

I also generated a 1 mb testfile on the server to test download speed using “dd if=/dev/urandom of=testfile bs=1024 count=1024″ :)
In this random file there are 16x smiley faces, 9x sad faces, an asian smiley with a missing ear [‘_’ and a vampire :-[
random file

also the word “UNiX” appears.. spooky.. It’s not the complete works of Shakespeare, but then again I didn’t have any monkeys.

October update

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Haven’t written many posts lately, so this is just a summing up post.

World of Warcraft
I ditched my tradeskills, Herbalism + Alchemy, and used LOTS of gold and time to get tailoring to 350, last night I made myself the Frozen Shadoweave Shoulders, which are pretty nice :) but I must say I’m pretty bored with Wow at the time, might have been grinding 100 motes of water that did it..
Also finally got the Masters Key, so I can now enter Karazhan.

Boat
I’m now on the waiting list to get harbor berth at the local sailing association.
Getting a spot will take around 1.5 -3 years or so, so I got plenty of time to save up for the actual boat :)

Work
The project I’m working on (Providing Real Integration in Multidisciplinary Environments) (hehe), is practically over so I guess I will get some new things to work on soon.
Also the 2 people I shared this office with left, one went to another company and the other moved to Oslo and will be working from there.

TV & Movies
Yay, Stargate atlants started up again last week, pretty exciting episode and I have really missed it.. Also Dexter season 2, and Curb your Enthusiasm started up again.
I saw the 28 Weeks later movie last week, it was much better than I had hoped for, and was a pretty decent movie. I also noticed there will be a new Wallace and Gromit movie soon (Trouble at mill)

Fuzzy wuzzy
We will be getting the newest addition to our family soon* (the little ferret, Cinnia’s Pinky Sophia).
* At the time of writing soon is defined as: in 9 days, 3 hours and 43 minutes

It’s that time of year again when I really want to get a boat, I’ve pretty much decided that I want the Bavaria 31 Cruiser

Bavaria 31 Cruiser

It’s a bit expensive (almost 600’000 kr or~110’000$), so I have to take up a loan in order to get it, if I take up a loan for 500’000 over the next 15 years, that should be around 5000 kr each month.. I’m expecting a raise this christmas, so that should provide 2500-3000 kr each additional month. Maybe if I’m lucky I will get some cash from the company options contract , but I consider the whole thing a bit iffy.. The bottom line is that nothing (except death or severe disabling injury) can keep me from getting a sailboat :)

I’m getting my VHF Short Range Certificate next month, I guess it’s a start :)

Also need to find a harbor spot which is kinda hard to get in Trondheim, as there are more people/boats than there are vacancies.

Current events

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Haven’t posted much lately.. Things have been pretty busy with work and the moving (only 6 days left, yaaaaay!), I’ve had almost no time for UFO Afterlight or Silent Hunter 4 the last 2 weeks, and I don’t expect I will have much time for C&C 3 when it is released next week.

I took out my scooter today, drove around a bit.. took like half an hour to start the bastard after it being in storage for 5 months this winter. I’m looking forward to not taking the bus to work tomorrow :)

The other thing that has kept me busy lately is that I have been making a new webpage (that combines aakretech.no, .com, .net and .org into a single page). Not quite done yet but most of the pages are in place. Removing the cocoon webapp for aakretech.org from my Tomcat server reduced the server’s startup time from 15 seconds to 0.7 seconds.

Not much more to say really.. Nemi got her new cage, but we wont get it for her until we move next Sunday/Monday
